About Lee Cowherd
For most of his professional life, Lee Cowherd was not known as a sculptor.
Music educator. Performer. Management consultant. Distillery tour guide.
Sculpture arrived later.
What began as curiosity gradually became a calling.
Drawn to portraiture, Cowherd became fascinated by the challenge of capturing not only physical likeness but also the character that makes a face uniquely human. Working primarily in clay, he developed his skills through independent study, workshops, and countless hours in the studio.
His work often explores history, memory, craftsmanship, and stewardship. Whether creating portraits of notable Kentucky figures, designing public art concepts, or developing original figurative pieces, his goal remains the same: to create sculptures that feel alive and invite viewers into a deeper connection with the subject.
Today, Cowherd continues to build a body of work that bridges portraiture, storytelling, and public art while maintaining an active studio practice in central Kentucky.
