Elmer T. Lee

Elmer Tandy Lee arrived at the distillery in 1949 after serving as a radar bombardier during World War II and earning an engineering degree from the University of Kentucky.

He began as a maintenance engineer and steadily worked his way upward, eventually becoming plant manager and master distiller. Lee oversaw decades of modernization and growth before retiring in 1985.

But his most enduring contribution came near the end of his career. Inspired by Colonel Blanton's tradition of selecting exceptional barrels, Lee introduced Blanton's Single Barrel in 1984, creating the first modern commercial single-barrel bourbon and establishing a new category of premium whiskey.

Elmer remained an ambassador for bourbon long after retirement, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with generations of visitors and whiskey enthusiasts.

He didn't simply preserve the distillery's history. He carried it forward
