E.H. Taylor, Jr.

Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. was a businessman, politician, distiller—and one of the men most responsible for transforming bourbon from a rough frontier spirit into a modern industry.

After the Civil War, Taylor built what he envisioned as a Model Distillery Plant of the World on the site that is now Buffalo Trace. He embraced technology and innovation, introducing copper fermentation tanks, column stills, improved sour-mash methods and climate-controlled warehouses. He was also instrumental in the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, establishing standards that helped give American whiskey a reputation for quality and consistency.

Taylor was larger than life in more ways than one. He served as mayor of Frankfort for sixteen years and became known as the Father of the Modern Bourbon Industry.
