George T. Stagg

George Thomas Stagg came to the bourbon business from an unusual direction. By 1865, he had already established himself as a successful whiskey salesman when he began working with E. H. Taylor, Jr.

Stagg brought something Taylor needed: business sense and salesmanship. In 1878, he purchased the O.F.C. Distillery and the surrounding property, becoming its owner and driving its expansion. Under his leadership, the distillery grew into one of the largest and most important bourbon producers of its era.

Stagg died in 1893, but his influence endured. In 1904, more than a decade after his death, the distillery was renamed the George T. Stagg Distillery in his honor.

His legacy is less about a particular bottle than about the ambition to build something that would last.
